Can One of These Herbal Insomnia Treatments Help You Sleep Better?
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 02nd, 2010
Most children would give anything to stay up late at night for fear of missing out on all the excitement. Only as adults does it become apparent that we weren’t missing out on much at all. In fact, there’s nothing at all exciting about not being able to sleep through the night. As more and more adults face sleep problems, herbal insomnia treatments are gaining in popularity.
First of all, when it comes to herbs for insomnia, there are two things to look for. Some of the herbs just help you sleep better, which is fine. Others though, are intended for conditions such as depression or stress that may lead to sleep problems in the first place.
One popular herb used to treat insomnia is lime blossom. However, it’s one of those herbs that isn’t really directly responsible for how you sleep. Instead, it affects how you feel.
You see, lime blossom can clean toxins out of your body and relieve all sorts of tension, including both muscle aches and headache pain. It can even help to lower your blood pressure, reducing your risk of certain medical problems such as heart attacks and strokes.
Aside from that, lime blossom can also help reduce fever when you’re suffering from minor illnesses such as the common cold and flu virus, for example. So, if your sleeping problem is a temporary one that’s caused by a being a bit under the weather, lime blossom can help.
Rosemary is another a good insomnia-fighting herb. It has some similar qualities to lime blossom. It can clean out your body and it can help with headaches, for instance.
Rosemary is actually known for being great at settling your stomach. So, if you have stomach problems that are keeping you from getting some much needed rest, rosemary might be a good choice for you. It can relieve bloating, gas, nausea and even acid reflux.
Another thing rosemary is great for, when used externally, is soothing sore muscles. For a minor muscle strain or injury as well as chronic muscle aches, rosemary can provide relief which will usually help you sleep better.
And last, but not least, there’s lavender. Lavender is one of the most popular herbs for tension relief but it’s worth noting that, if you’re pregnant, you shouldn’t take lavender internally.
Lavender has a smell that is proven to be calming and relaxing and help people sleep. Also, like rosemary and lime blossom, lavender is good for relieving tension, curing headaches, settling stomachs and making you feel generally stronger and healthier. These qualities help improve your chances of getting a better night of sleep.
Regardless of which herbal insomnia treatments you choose, there’s no shortage of simple but natural ways to cure the problem. Do a little research and check in with your doctor and you’ll be sleeping soundly before you know it!
The Devastating Effects of Insomnia
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 01st, 2010
In today’s busy society, sleep is often something that does not get prioritized amongst the long list of things to get done. The phrase “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is often heard - unfortunately, in worst cases death may come much sooner from a lack of sleep.
Insomnia gradually destroys lives over time, as the symptoms of sleep deprivation get worse and worse. Even the less severe sufferers find their ability to get through the day and maintain their relationships seriously compromised. Irritability, inability to concentrate, and drowsiness are all associated with insomnia. Studies have shown that driving while sleep deprived is actually more dangerous in many cases than driving drunk!
Sleep deprivation is also used as a powerful interrogation technique, as it ends with the person breaking down, simply unable to maintain their resolve. Lack of quality sleep destroys lives. You won’t be able to take care of yourself or others, maintain your job, relationships, or anything else.
While most insomnia cases do not seem severe at first, when allowed to escalate the consequences are very serious. Many people dismiss insomnia as something that lasts a couple nights every now and then, and then goes away when the conditions that made it arise disappear.
However, insomnia can propagate itself. While it may begin as the odd night not being able to sleep, the sufferer always remembers how awful the next day was. This can lead to anxiety about falling asleep which may cause the insomnia to appear once again, creating a seemingly never-ending cycle.
You’ve got to catch insomnia as early as possible, even if it doesn’t seem serious. You don’t want it to escalate, or to have to use chemical sleeping pills and become dependent on them. There are natural remedies that you can use which don’t have negative side effects, and some of the techniques may help you live better by teaching you to better handle the stress in your life.
Women Sleep Better Than Men
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 01st, 2010
New research is suggesting that older women actually enjoy a better quality of sleep than men. A team of Dutch researchers found that women also needed to have more sleep than men in order to function at their optimum level throughout each day.
It was found that women sleep for a average of 16 minutes more than men and that their sleep was less interrupted and of a higher quality in comparison.
The tests were conducted with the use of an Actigraph which volunteers had to wear for 6 nights in a row to accurately record data as they slept. Among the male subjects it was common for them to overestimate the amount of time they had actually slept each night while women gave opposite opinions and tended to underestimate the amount they had slept on a nightly basis.
It was also found that using medication to help aid sleep was far more prevalent amongst women but it also caused them to feel they had only slept for shorter periods which was incorrect when compared to the recorded data. The use of alcohol was more common in men and using it appears to have shortened the time spent sleeping well.
So contrary to the common belief, it is women who enjoy a better standard of sleep overall while men experience a greater frequency of disturbed sleep. It is hoped that this study will encourage others to conduct their own research into this field. To date there has been a surprising lack of work done in the area of gender differences regarding sleep quality and patterns.
How Food Affects Your Ability to Sleep
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 01st, 2010
You’ve no doubt heard to avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, because they might affect your ability to sleep well. However, most people don’t know just how important food is for sleep.
If you think about it, it makes sense. We put food into our bodies every day, and the nutrients in that food are what keep us going; food determines to a large degree whether we are healthy or not and how we feel. If you’re not healthy because you haven’t been eating well, you may feel tired and lacking in energy and yet sleeping won’t come easy.
Just the amount of food you eat makes a difference. Going to bed on a full stomach may make you feel sleepy, but it actually disrupts your sleep because your digestive system is being forced to work harder than it normally would during periods of rest. Unrelated to insomnia, going to bed on a full stomach can encourage weight gain as well, because your body can’t digest as well.
It is best to have more smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. If this isn’t possible, try to prevent dinner from being the biggest and heaviest meal on most days. A lighter dinner such as a stir fry will satisfy your hunger and help you sleep.
If it’s closer to bedtime and you’re feeling hungry, there are snacks you can try which may help you get to sleep. Keep in mind that it’s best to avoid eating less than an hour before bed. Warm milk, tea and honey, fruit or whole grain cereal are great snacks which won’t stress your digestive system before bed, meaning you’ll go to sleep feeling satisfied.
