Remedies For Snoring and Anti Snoring Devices

Snoring is a unilateral problem which affects people of all ages and affects those who have to share a bed with them even more. Remedies for snoring range from the commonplace to the bizarre, with a last resort being surgery on the tissues of the septum or the throat. You are likely to look like chipmunk with black eyes for weeks after the operation, and the pain is considerable, but if it works it is worth it, otherwise your eyes may well be blacked by your partner who has been driven to the edge of madness by the noise of your snoring.
Men snore more than women, and snorers themselves suffer even though they can’t hear the appalling noise they are making because, without realising it, they are waking up many times a night, which means the quality of their sleep is poor and they wake next morning as weary as if they haven’t slept at all. A tired husband and a sleepless wife do not make for a harmonious partnership!
So what can be done about the snoring problem? Well, before you trawl the Net looking for remedies for snoring, it’s worth doing a little detective work to try and establish whether the culprit is a nose or mouth snorer. The only way you will find this out is to listen to him; so resist the desire to smother him with his favourite Winnie-the-Pooh pillow and watch him instead.? If he falls asleep with his mouth closed and snores through his nose, then his nasal passages are constricted; perhaps he has small nostrils or a partial blockage from a deformed septum, or has broken his nose at some stage in his life. Conditions like sinusitis, asthma and rhinitis can also cause nose snoring, as can having a cold.
Anti snoring devices in nose snorers include nasal strips and nostril dilators; he will look ridiculous, but hey, you are used to that.? If he snores because he insists on sleeping on his back, develop sharp elbows to poke him in the ribs or sew a rubber ball into the back of his pyjamas so that it is too uncomfortable for him to lie on his back.? You never know, it may work!
Now we get to mouth snorers. These are the seriously noisy ones that you can hear three rooms away, that sound like a pneumatic drill going through concrete; they fall asleep with their mouth open and the jaw and tongue base drops back into the throat, partially blocking the airway and causing the flesh there to vibrate - what a racket! Mouth snoring can be caused by being overweight (there is a lot of loose flesh around the jaw area), and drinking alcohol and smoking are also common causes.
The most serious cause is a condition called sleep apnea, in which the snorer actually stops breathing many times during the hours of sleep. As you can imagine, this is potentially fatal and if you are at all suspicious, have the snorer checked out by a doctor whether he wants to or not.? Remedies for snoring in mouth snorers include jaw supporters, electric shocks and making him sleep somewhere else. Preferably, the next town.
