Discovery Of Association Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea And Weight Gain
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on June 18th, 2009
According to a research abstract presented at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, a link exists between the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and weight gain.
Results indicate that people with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), the average of the combined episodes of apnea and hypopnea that occur per hour of sleep, of over 15 had an increase in body mass index (BMI) of 0.52 kg/m2 compared to those with an AHI between 5 and 15, who saw an increase of 0.22 kg/m2.
According to lead author Mark Brown, MD, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, people suffering from more severe OSA may be more likely to gain more weight than those with less severe OSA over time.
“OSA is a disorder characterized by decreases or cessation of breathing during sleep. Obesity is a known risk factor for the disorder; however, it is hypothesized that the effects of OSA itself may predispose patients to weight gain,” said Brown.
The study included data from 3,001 men and women from the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) with an average age of 62.19. Of the sample, 55.2 percent of participants were female and 76.1 percent were Caucasian. Participants were classified as having no (AHI of less than 5), moderate (AHI between 5 and 15), and severe OSA (AHI of over 15). Weight and polysomnograph information were collected. Linear regression was used to examine the association between AHI groups and the change in BMI over approximately five years. The final model was adjusted for age, gender, race, initial BMI and change in AHI over 5 years.

Stop Snoring Products - A Guide to Help the Snorers and the Sufferers
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on June 18th, 2009
The search for stop snoring products is not a such desperate one for the snorer. While they are happily asleep, the poor soul lying next to them, or in the next room can’t sleep. They might be desperately pulling their hair out, frustrated because they can’t sleep, as the sound of an elephant trumps in their ear, or permeates noisily through the wall.
Even at the end of your tether, you don’t want to put the snorer through surgery because as well as being expensive, it is also quite risky. Some risks as a result of surgery might be problems with speech, extreme ear pain, scar tissue and even hemorrhaging. So let’s look at some less perilous products to stop snoring, like drugs, devices, sleeping positions and exercises.
There are some drugs available over the pharmaceutical counter, that can help people stop snoring. As a general rule these are designed to open the nasal passages, aid respiration and prevent deep sleep. Obviously preventing deep sleep is far from ideal, as this can lead to all sorts of other health issues. However, some cold and flu treatments can be beneficial to open up nasal passages and aid respiration.
There are a few stop snoring devices on the market, the majority of which are designed to prevent the snorer lying on their back. You don’t really need to buy any of these devices like the snore ball, as you can create the same effect by using household objects to see if this will help.
By using half a tennis ball, or a ball make up from socks and attaching it to the guilty person’s small of the back, it will be uncomfortable enough to wake them up every time they lie on their back, so they learn to sleep on their side. Some people are less likely to snore (if they snore through their mouth) when sleeping on their sides.
Stop snoring products may not even be the answer, as sometimes changing sleeping positions can actually reduce snoring. Other than the aforementioned sleeping on one’s side, putting something under the chin can help, like a hand, pillow or a sock can help, as this means there is less loose skin to vibrate against air in the trachea. Also putting a pillow under the small of the back is also something that can be tried, because this helps open the airways by allowing the lungs to expand more.
Some of the stop snoring products and positions can help solve the snoring problem, but quite an effective one is to do some simple exercises. Some of these exercise include pretending to chew gum with your molars a little part, then touching lightly, with your lips closed for a minute at a time. This strengthens weak throat tissues and helps open the airways.
A couple of other good stop snoring exercises are taking a pencil and holding it between your teeth for about five minutes, and pushing your tongue against your bottom row of teeth for five minutes. These exercises will tone the throat muscles and can help to alleviate snoring.
Be sure to share this article with any snorers you know, some of these stop snoring products might just stop a few of us going insane. After all, one elephant trump too many and a lack of sleep can make us do very strange things. Snorers, beware!
Natural Sleep Aids - Travel and OTC Sleep Aids
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on June 18th, 2009
Over the counter sleep aids are not an uncommon thing these days. According to emedicinehealth there is an estimated 30-50% of the general population suffering from insomnia. With sleep being a crucial part of normal bodily function it’s no wonder why there are so many sleep aid pills on the market. Insomnia is defined as difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. With so many over-the-counter sleep aids claiming to help you get your ZZZ’s what should you look for? Here are 5 Supplement Solutions that have been used to bring relief to sleepless nights.
1) Melatonin is one of the most popular sleep aids on the market today. It is naturally produced in the body by your pineal gland, which makes serotonin that is eventually converted into Melatonin. It is usually given in dosages of 1-3mg.
2) Valerian is a very popular herb in natural sleep pills. It widely accepted in some countries in Europe (Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy) as a remedy for insomnia.
3) Lavender has been used in just about every way as a sleep aid. This shrubby flowering bush has been used to help with sleep through aromatherapy, drinking tea, oils, pills, etc…
4) Chamomile has been used as a sleep aid throughout much of history. Like Lavender it has been converted to aromatherapy, tea, oils, pills, etc..
5) 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is an amino acid. It’s made by tryptophan (a key ingredient in turkey, no wonder we take a nap at thanksgiving). It is one of the 20 essential amino acids made by the human body. 5-HTP and Tryptophan raise serotonin, which has been suggested to help you sleep among several other positive affects.
Hopefully these tips will lead you to a long happy night’s sleep. If you chose to use an over-the-counter sleep aid please be sure to consult your doctor for possible side effects.
