Stop Snoring Pillows - Do They Actually Work?
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on July 02nd, 2009
Are you a snorer who feels guilty at keeping everyone awake and is so frustrated at not been able to do anything about it. Stop snoring pillows have been specially designed to try and combat this problem. In this article I will explain the idea behind them, the different types and their main disadvantage, so after reading it you will be able to make a more informed choice.
The theory behind stop snoring pillows
The main idea behind snoring pillows is to try to keep the airways open and free from restriction. The narrower the air passage the more chance of causing the soft palate at the back of your throat to vibrate, which is the snoring sound.
The snoring pillows help by aligning the head, neck and spine so the air can pass though without restriction.
Types of stop snoring pillows
The most widely used and properly the best is a foam pillow with a lowered centre portion.
A raised edge at the bottom helps to keep the chin away from the chest and the jaw slightly forward.
The reason for the dip in the middle is this promotes a better alignment of the neck and spine. It can be used for people who sleep on their side (which is the preferable position) or back.
Some of the more advanced versions have an inflatable centre that you can adjust for added comfort.
Other types of pillows are designed to fit in the small of your back keeping the suffer on their side
There are also pillows for snoring that fit between your thighs to help with spine realignment
Do They work?
Stop snoring pillows seemed to get mixed reviews, with some people getting a quality deep sleep while others have had little or no effect. It does seems very much dependent on the individual.
If you do decide to try one out make sure it’s foam and has the lowered middle with the raised edge as this attempts to tackle not only body alignment but positioning of the chin and jaw.
Disadvantage. The main problem is they are only a temporary fix, so you are not actually tackling the root cause of your snoring.
