Discover the Side Effects of Sleep Apnea Surgery
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on September 22nd, 2009
The side effects of sleep apnea surgeries are rarely serious but should be taken into consideration and weighed against the effects on your health of sleep deprivation.
Sleep deprivation can have some very dangerous side effects. It’s possible that you may have problems with your emotional or physical health, so finding the root cause and dealing with it is essential. One of the first things that should be checked is your daily stress threshold.
However if you have a relatively stress free life there could be a physical cause. Sleep apnea occurs when your airways are blocked in some way causing you to stop breathing for up to a minute. Your body’s response is to waken you to start breathing again and as a result although you may not be aware or remember it you could be waking up for a brief moment many times during the night.
This means that you won’t get the deep restorative sleep that your body needs for repair and health. There are many ways to cure sleep apnea and you should start with the least invasive treatment first. If they don’t work then try some of the more invasive treatments.
Breathe right strips are very simple to use and available in most supermarkets or pharmacies. They work by keeping the nostrils open and allowing air to enter the airways. If they don’t work then try eliminating stimulating foods in the evening such as caffeine. Instead of regular coffee try decaf. Also avoid rich spicy foods late in the evening.
If you are overweight try losing a few pounds. Excess weight is a major cause of sleep apnea, and losing weight has many health benefits such as decreasing your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease, as well as curing your snoring problem.
One of the most popular cures for sleep apnea is a cpap machine. This is a mask attached to a machine that delivers oxygen at a constant pressure. It ensures that the airways are kept clear during sleep.
If all these methods fail to work and you still have problems with sleep apnea then surgery may be an option to consider. Most procedures are carried out using a laser and only require a local anesthetic, so there won’t be risks associated with general anesthetics.
However there are some side effects of sleep apnea surgery that you should consider including the following;
1. Headaches
2. Chronic nasal drainage or dryness
3. Numbness of the sinus cavity or throat
4. Prolonged pain
5. Nosebleeds, or
6. A weakened sense of smell or taste
Make sure you take all of this into consideration before deciding on surgery. However the effect of prolonged sleep deprivation could be far worse than the effects of sleep apnea surgery.
