What's the Best Home Remedy For Snoring?
Posted by admin in Prescription Sleep Medicine on October 22nd, 2009
So you’ve just gone to bed; you’ve found a good spot in the mattress and gotten comfortable. You slowly drift off into a peaceful sleep; until you’re jolted awake by the deafening sound of snoring. While snoring can be absolutely horrible to the person who has to sleep near it, it can also be dangerous to the snorer.
Medical treatment of snoring is expensive, so you may want to try some home remedies for snoring first. There are tons of simple tips and tricks out there. Here are some of those easy home remedies for snoring that you can try.
The best home remedy for snoring, but also probably the hardest, is adopt more healthy habits. The most important part of this is to lose weight. Excess fat in the neck and throat region can collapse your throat in increase the amount of snoring. You should also refrain from heavy eating before bedtime because a full stomach can push up on other organs and cause the same problems. You should also stay away from alcohol and sleeping pills before sleeping. These cause all your muscles to relax, including the muscle at the back of your mouth which causes snoring when it relaxes, Another good idea is to quit smoking (did you really need another reason?)
A more simple home remedy for snoring is to sleep on your side or stomach. If you naturally roll over to your back while you sleep, there are some tips you can use to stay on your side. If someone else sleeps in your room, you may be able to convince them to roll you back onto your side. Some people may be so desperate to make the snoring stop, they’ll be happy to help. If this isn’t an option, you could also sew a tennis ball onto the back of your pajamas. That way, when you roll onto your back, you’ll be uncomfortable and roll back onto your side, probably without even waking up.
Many people may tell you to elevate your head. This decreases congestion and lessens the symptoms of snoring. However, if you elevate yourself improperly, you can actually make symptoms worse rather than better. Using lots of pillows to elevate your head can cause your neck to kink and make snoring worse. The proper snoring home remedy is to use only one flat pillow and elevate the entire head of the bed 4 to 6 inches. This can be done easily by putting bricks under the feet and the head of the bed.
While snoring can be annoying to bedmates, it can also be harmful or even fatal to you. Bad snoring may be a sign of a serious condition called sleep apnea. This is a condition which causes you to stop breathing for periods during sleep. If you are significantly overweight, have high blood pressure, or wake up often in the middle of the night gasping for air, and these home remedies for snoring haven’t helped; you should see a sleep specialist. If the doctor says you’re ok and none of these remedies help, you can always invest in a good pair of earplugs.
