Of course, your doctor will need to refer you to the clinic if they feel it is necessary. For your sake and that of anyone who shares your bed, you should have snoring checked out by a medical professional.

The First Step

First, make an appointment with your physician, once there you will be required to undergo a medical evaluation, which should include a medical history. Your partner really should be present to answer questions about your snoring that your are unaware of, after all you were asleep.

After your evaluation, your physician may choose to send you to an ear, nose and throat specialist or a sleep facility for further testing. If it is the latter, you will most likely need to spend the night so the treatment team can evaluate your sleep.

You probably already know that snoring can be a major annoyance especially for your bed partner. You should know however that you also face certain other medical risks if you snore consistently and do not seek treatment. You put yourself in the position to suffer heart attack, stroke and developing high blood pressure. If it is your child who is snoring loudly, you should know it could put them at a high risk of suffering ADHD.

Choices

Be aware that you may be facing some lifestyle changes as well, if you smoke, are overweight, drink or locked to a specific sleeping position things are going to need to change drastically. In fact losing weight, quitting smoking or drinking and changing sleep positions will likely be your first steps in battling your snoring.

You may also be a good candidate for an oral appliance. In some extreme cases, surgery may be required to fix the problem, today there are many types of surgery for snoring such as laser, traditional and somnoplasty are all varying surgeries to choose from depending on the cause of your snoring.
