Do you sleep well? Good for you if you do. If you don’t, read on for some tips on how to sleep a lot better, and for some things I learned the hard way.

I sleep like a baby these days, but it hasn’t always been like that.

For a number of years, I would lie awake, tossing and turning, for the better part of the night, and only go to sleep a couple of hours before I had to get up again. As you can probably imagine, I usually felt like a truck had run over me.

Much of the time, I was stressed about something, and that was what was keeping me awake. Not that it helped. After all, when you’re too tired to do anything, you’re unlikely to come up with brilliant solutions for your problems. Sleep is much more effective for that.

So what to do?

Here’s what I did that eventually helped me resolve that problem…

First of all, alternative health nut that I am, I already used a lot of different things in my desperate attempts to get some shut-eye.

At the height of my sleep deprivation cycle, I threw every bit of artillery at it that I could get my hands on: herbs, melatonin, aromatherapy, even prescription drugs, plus relaxation CDs, and all that on top of making sure that all the other conditions were met.

About those “other” conditions?

The room had to be completely dark, be at the perfect temperature (about 21 C or 72 F), it has to be completely quiet, plus the bedding has to be just right. Call me fussy!

And sometimes I STILL couldn’t sleep!

Now, in comparison, I lied down and fall asleep. Period. Very occasionally, I still use half a dose of herbs but that’s all (unless I forget), and sometimes I add aromatherapy, though I haven’t done either for quite a while.

Oh, but I do use ear plugs, a special German brand that I buy in bulk every time I visit there. Fortunately, I discovered they also sell them at Amazon.com now, so I can get them if I run out without having to bug my German friends.

About the earplugs — I’ve used them since I was 16 years old, and never weaned myself off them. I used to feel a bit weird about that, but now I think — why should I? They provide me with a better quality of sleep. They also signal to my body it’s time to go to sleep.

What ended up making the difference, practically overnight?

Believe it or not — the most helpful part seemed to be that I started meditating — and not just any kind of meditation, but a very powerful type of meditation I discovered as part of my Quantum Touch energy healing training. It was almost spooky how well it worked — and sleeping better wasn’t even the reason I did it for at first. As I’m thinking back though, the most important part was that this meditation, and a few other things I did, ended up helping me reduce the stress in my life, or at least helped me cope with it better. And that’s what made the difference.
