Insomnia is the brain’s way of dealing with stress…its too “wired up” to let the sleep center work. True to that, I usually get bouts of insomnia when I am deeply worried about something or someone. I have been suffering from insomnia lately and I do not mind at all. That is probably because I have a few days off and I can afford to take a nap later in the day, when the sleep does come along. However for those of you who have a day job and you do not want to literally sleep on the job, I have a few tricks on how I deal with my insomnia.

Are you tired of the old methods of dealing with insomnia like drinking milk and counting sheep that do not work? Here are 6 tips on how I deal with my insomnia.

1. Try not to think of insomnia as such a bad thing. I usually get up and catch up on my email correspondence or do all the things that I have been wanting to do but have not had time to do in a while…maybe insomnia is the universe’s way of getting you to do all those things you have not had time for.

2. Get a winding down routine before you go to bed. Reading, especially the newspaper, does it for me. Other people read novels or watch TV to sleep.

3. Deal with the issue causing you insomnia…talk to someone; get it off your chest. Get therapy if need be. My husband usually does not appreciate being woken up to talk about something in the middle of the night so wait till morning or talk before other people go to bed (no need to get jealous of those with normal sleep patterns).

4. Learn to let go of what you cannot control or change. Then you will not be so worried because worry does not change a thing. This is usually a learnt process and it takes a while to master if you give it a chance in the first place.

5. Think about all the things that you are thankful for and the issue causing sleepless nights may not seem as such a big one after all.

6. Get a hobby or begin a project that utilizes the hours you are awake and has results that are gratifying. Then your insomnia will be a blessing in disguise. For me, internet marketing has become my latest project. The monetary gain is very rewarding indeed and perhaps that is what has changed my attitude towards insomnia. You may not need your day job after all and you can catch up on your sleep later! In summary, accept the insomnia, deal with the issues causing it and control it. Do not let it control you.
