If someone you love snores and keeps you awake every night, you are probably willing to try all the stop snoring remedies you can find. Unfortunately a lot of these products do not fulfill the claims they make on the packaging and marketing materials.

When the airway in your throat is narrowed, snoring occurs when you breathe in causing the soft palate and airway walls to vibrate. There are a number of causes. Some pregnant women start to snore as the pregnancy advances. Others snore as they grow older or as a result of an accident. You should always get checked out by your doctor to rule out sleep apnea. This is a relatively serious condition; your airways close completely for a couple of seconds so you actually stop breathing. This has been linked to heart disease and stroke.

If you don’t know what is causing your snoring, it might be a reason why the over the counter remedies don’t work.

For example nasal strips are a very popular remedy but as few people actually snore because of nasal problems, they are actually ineffective in most sufferers.

There is a very unattractive device on the market that holds your lower jaw forward. This draws the tongue forward thus opening the airway. If your snoring is caused by nasal problems this contraption may work; however, most people do not like having to sleep with something in their mouth. This makes it unlikely that they will continue to use it.

There is an interesting plaster available to use on your chin to keep your mouth shut. One tester said it did reduce his snoring but only because he couldn’t sleep due to the discomfort. Hardly a long term solution!

One potential snoring remedy still in its testing stages is a singing DVD. The theory is that if you sing, you are strengthening your mouth muscles and this can help prevent snoring. The DVD makers also encourage you to lose weight and exercise more. Those testers who completed all three steps did report an improvement in the sound levels and duration of their snoring. Doctors have always suggested that losing excess pounds combined with regular exercise will help your sleep issues.

If your snoring is causing you and your partner sleepless nights, speak to your doctor or dentist and ask for a referral to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist. These consultants will be able to arrange a series of tests to diagnose the reason behind your snoring and will then help you to choose some snoring remedies to find one that works for you.
